Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Review

The Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary was released by Omega officially in 2019 and became available at boutiques in early 2020. As described by Omega On the 21st of July 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped off the Eagle to become the first humans to stand on another world. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of that moment, OMEGA has crafted a new Limited Edition of 6,969 pieces inspired by Apollo 11 the watch is a limited edition of 6.969 pieces vs the usual 1969 that Omega released in previous editions.

I believe that the relatively large number of watches available to allow collectors and Speedmaster lovers all over the world to acquire one. This edition is priced at 9,600 CHF

There was also a more exclusive edition in full moonshine gold limited to 1,014 pieces at 36,400 CHF.

The steel/gold version features Astronaut Buzz Aldrin in the seconds dial exiting the rover and ready to walk on the moon

The watch is steel with the proprietary yellow gold “moonshine gold” alloy developed by Omega which should retail the yellow shine through the years.

Sizing is 42mm but very wearable and comfortable thanks to the new thinner bracelet

The dial features moonshine gold indexes, a grey center dial and black at the borders

The back of the watch doesn’t reveal the new Omega 3861 caliber Manual-winding chronograph movement with Co-Axial escapement. Certified Master Chronometer, approved by METAS, resistant to magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss. Free-sprung balance with silicon balance spring. Rhodium-plated finish, bridges with straight Geneva waves.

but a very cool reproduction of the first step on the moon with the famous engraving

The watch is very versatile and very elegant with a shirt and suit.

The only initial downside is that winding, probably because of crown guards, doesn’t appear to be so smooth as other models. Perhaps is the new movement ? Not a deal breaker

The gold elements are fairly discreet so I would say that is still very wearable and certainly not as “bling” as the full gold version :)

In summary, we found this commemorative speedmaster to be exactly what speedmaster enthusiast wanted: a very distinct design, a new gold alloy, new bracelet and updated METAS certified movement. An excellent choice.
